Impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) refers to a prediabetic condition, diagnosed with an oral glucose tolerance test. It does not cause any symptoms but people with prediabetes may have obesity, dyslipidemia, and hypertension. People with prediabetes would have a high rate of progression to type 2 diabetes, but it can be a reversible condition with lifestyle changes. Recently, people with IGT has been associated with gut microbiota changes and can be stratified into high and low risk groups for the T2D progression by gut microbiome signatures [Fredrik H. Karlsson et al.]. In addition, butyrate-producing bacteria were observed to be reduced in prediabetes and type 2 diabetes [Hao Wu et al.].
